Do you remember the freedom and exhilaration that came with being a teenager? Acing that test, asking someone out to the prom, cheering on your home team at sports events… it’s hard not to forget the rush of joy that comes from being a part of something bigger than yourself.
As an Indiana University alum, I still love to attend all the football and basketball events in Bloomington (one of my happy places). I was lucky enough to go to the Indiana – Perdue basketball game this year where I witnessed one of the most competitive rivalries on campus. Rob Phinisee, one of the most well-known players at Indiana, made a winning shot with seconds left on the clock. Immediately, I witnessed hundreds of spectators rush down to storm the court in celebration of this victory. The pure jubilation I saw in Rob’s eyes, and the rest of the team’s, was undeniable. The time and energy they had invested into this season had suddenly paid off in a matter of seconds.
We know that the determination and diligence it takes to see the fruits of our labor is tiresome, and sometimes downright frustrating. But in moments like this, when we take the winning shot – we make the connection, we score the deal, we meet our financial goal – we can’t help but feel like it was all worth the effort.
Just like how those kids stormed the court at 18 years old, I want to feel that same way at 59. But most importantly, I want you to feel that way too.
What will it take for you to feel that same rush?
